MSA – ALTAIR 5X Multigas Detector
The MSA ALTAIR 5X Multigas PID Detector is an advanced gas detection device designed for fast, accurate readings in hazardous environments. Featuring up to six rapid-response MSA XCell® sensors, it detects gases twice as fast as the industry average, ensuring quicker response times when every second counts. The durable sensors offer a lifespan of over four years for detecting combustible gases, O₂, CO/H₂S, and SO₂, while NH₃ and Cl₂ sensors are designed to last over three years, providing long-term reliability.
Despite its extensive features, the ALTAIR 5X is incredibly lightweight, weighing just 450g. Its large display allows for clear visibility and easy operation — even while wearing gloves. Equipped with intelligent software, the device connects to the ALTAIR Connect app, enabling remote configuration and providing real-time data such as sensor readings, man-down alerts, and more via Bluetooth connectivity. The ALTAIR 5X also automates gas detection records and notifications, ensuring critical updates are shared instantly.

No, however we would suggest that you undertake a Confined Space Course which covers the use of gas monitors. Our sister company Citrus Training offers these courses.
Taking into consideration the ATEX directive, manufacturer recommendations and your own company risk assessments, it is recommended that you bump test your monitor before every use, it is true that the law is not clear and doesn’t use the all-important word “MUST” and the regulation only surrounds flammable gases, not toxic, but you can guarantee that the authorities would want to see evidence of such testing should the worst happen!
