The challenge
Severn Trent Services is a well-known name in reed bed maintenance and large-scale desludging, offering a wide range of water and waste management services across the UK.
The challenge for Severn Trent was ensuring the safety of their engineers while adhering to stringent regulatory compliance requirements. They needed a way to manage daily testing and calibration of their gas detection equipment, keep accurate compliance records, and have real-time monitoring in place. On top of that, they wanted to give their teams the tools and training to handle safety confidently and independently, without having to rely on outside help every time.
Our Approach
To tackle this, we adopted a tailored approach that combined the right technology with hands-on support. We introduced the MSA 5X Gas Detectors along with GX2 Calibration Stations, giving them reliable, accurate gas monitoring and easy calibration. On top of that, we set them up with MSA The Grid, a remote monitoring system with a Fleet Manager dashboard. This made it simple to track compliance, keep an eye on driver accountability, manage incidents, and access real-time information to help things run more smoothly.
Alongside the technological solutions, we ran Toolbox Talks to stress the importance of daily bump testing for gas monitors, supplied Bump Test Kits so every engineer could check and calibrate their gear on their own, and set up regular training sessions. We also did on-site visits and held weekly Teams calls to keep the support going strong.
A big part of the success came from building good relationships with key people at Severn Trent, like the Health and Safety Well-being Lead, Senior Advisor, Regional Service Delivery Managers, and Field Technicians. We also worked closely with our channel partner, MSA, to make sure the equipment was seamlessly integrated and working exactly as needed.
The Result
Thanks to this partnership, Severn Trent’s teams are now better equipped to handle safety on their own. The new gas detection devices and remote monitoring have made daily checks and record-keeping much easier and more reliable. MSA The Grid has completely changed how they manage compliance, making record-keeping and reporting more efficient while ensuring regulatory requirements are consistently met.
The engineers now have the tools and training to confidently calibrate their equipment, monitor safety, and respond quickly to any issues, without having to rely on external support every time. It reduced downtime, improved efficiency, and encouraged a real culture of accountability and proactive safety across the teams.
